Last Updated on November 24, 2022 by Swadesi

A strong, roborant woman and an Indian Author of par excellence, Arundhati Roy with unmatched writing skills is known for her award-winning book “The God Of Small Things”. She drafted it in the year 1997 almost a decade past from now, but now also it seems to be a choice of book lovers. She was born on 24 November 1961 in Shillong, a place where we lost our another gem, an eminent writer, an intelligent scientist, beloved president Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Arundhati Roy is also a political activist and campaigned against many Human Rights and Environment causes such as Narmada Dam Project, support for Kashmir Separatism, spokesperson of the anti-globalization movement. She is against India’s policies towards nuclear weapons as well as industrialization.

Arundhati’s work “The God Of Small Things” published in 1997 brought her the glory of Man Booker Prize in the very same year and she also won the Sydney Peace Prize (2004). About millions of copies were sold making it the biggest-selling book by an Indian Author. The God of Small Things is her initial work and is listed as one of the New York Times Notable Books of the year. Arundhati Roy received half a million pounds as an advance so it was a commercial success as well. What else a budding writer would’ve wished for! She donated money as well as royalties from her book to Human Rights causes.

The Book shows her immense treasure of vocabulary. The way she personified things is not everyone’s cup of tea. One can sit in evenfall with her book in one hand and a dictionary in another. She explained the nature with such metaphors that mention of dullsville evening in her book would also keep us engaged. She is an enlightened skill of writing as if the beautiful words sashay her mind differently framing unique sentences even for simple incidents. In India, the book was criticized by the Chief Minister for her unconfined description of sexuality but it did not bother her as she was confident and strong enough to face such criticism. She started working on her second masterpiece “The Ministry of Utmost Happiness” in 2007, which published in the year 2016 by penguin India and Hanush Hamilton UK. Again. The novel was chosen for The Man Booker Prize in 2017 Long List.
