Blue Pottery of Jaipur

It is made using the Egyptian paste, which is glazed and low-fired. The use of dough made from mixing quartz stone powder, Multani Mitti, powdered glass, gum, borax and water is what distinguishes it from other arts since all other pottery uses clay.

This art was inspired by the usage of this blue green glass in the kite strings by two brothers who were potters by profession. The patterns vary from motifs of Persian culture to contemporary designs which include geometric designs, flora and fauna and also many gods and goddesses.

The making of this art is very tedious. After the dough is made, it is rolled and flattened to look like a pancake which is then mixed with Bajri and Raakh, put into moulds and turned upside down. Then it is removed and left to dry after which is it cleaned, polished and given shape.

A solution of quartz powder, flour, powdered glass and water is made in which it is dipped and further dried. A design is then engraved on the surface using a solution of gum and cobalt oxide.

Using a mixture of powdered glass, zinc oxide, boric acid, borax and potassium nitrate, a coating is done to give it the final touch. Finally they are heated in a kiln. This form of art was booming in 1960’s in the international market too after which it kept evolving with time.
