India is blessed with scenic beauty and nature. Most of India is consists of places that resemble heaven on earth. One of these places is Shivanasamudra and its twin waterfalls. Shivanasamudra is a small town in the Chamarajanagar District of Karnataka.
Shivanasamudra Falls
It is situated on the banks of the river Kaveri forming a boundary with the Mandya District. Shivanasamudra is one of the first hydro-electric power stations in Asia, set up in the year 1902.
The island town is home to ancient temples; Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Sri Someshwara Temple and Shakthi Devathe Temple of Vanadurga Devi are the three main temples situated there. These temples are rich examples of ancient Hindu culture and architecture.
The Shivanasamudra Falls is located on the Kaveri River after the river has found its way through the Deccan Plateau and drops off to form the twin waterfalls of Shivanasamudra.
The river splits itself a few kilometers to the south into western and eastern branches resulting in Gaganachukki the western branch waterfall and Bharachukki the eastern branch fall. Shivanasamudra island town causes this divide of the river into twin waterfalls, which creates the fourth largest island in the Kaveri River’s course.
The twin waterfalls, Gaganachukki falls in Mandya district and Bharachukki falls in Chamarajanagar district of Indian state Karnataka. The distance between both of the waterfalls is nearly 2 kilometers.
The average width of the waterfalls is 1,001 ft.; height is 322 ft. and the average volume of 934 cubic meters per second. It is a permanent waterfall. The time of the best flow is the monsoon season of July to October.
The waterfalls are 139 kilometers from the city of Bangalore. There are several buses available from Bangalore KR Market and Malavalli to Milega.
The Gaganachukki falls can also be reached from the Darga Hazrath Mardane Gaib of Mandya district. Three-wheelers are available between the falls and the hand post for easier access and transportation. Many resorts have opened near to the waterfalls offering night stays.
The twin waterfalls of Shivanasamudra are a segmented waterfall. These kinds of waterfalls are the result of broken water flow into two or more channels before it drops over a cliff, which creates multiple sides by side waterfalls.
Burgess Falls in Tennessee, Diner Falls in Queensland Glanni in Iceland are some of the famous segmented waterfalls around the world.
