Pochampally or pochampalli saree is a type of handloom saree which has its roots from the town named Pochampally, located in the Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana. Pochampally is a type of silk originating from this town out of which sarees are made on a handloom.

The town of pochampally is popularly known as the “Silk city of India”. Pochampally sarees are famous for the Ikat style of weaving which is intricately done by the proficient weavers. Pochampally silk sarees are also worn by the air hostesses of Air India, the government’s official air transport.

Origin

This beautiful artwork draws its source back to the 18th century. Pochampally town had about 80 villages under its division and the production of silk sarees began with traditional looms in the villages. Pochampally Ikat is locally known as Pogudubandhu, Chitki, and Buddabhashi. Nowadays, the weaving of sarees in done in pochampally village with over five thousand looms creating this textile.

Style

Pochampalli silk is about engraving the fine ikat designs and motifs on the fabric using the excellent thread-work of silk and cotton. The geometrical designs and prints are colored on the weft and warp yarns which are then woven into the artistic pochampally fabric. The true essence of the fabric lies in the mixture of silk and cotton.

Pochampally sarees are best suited for summers because of its components which includes cotton and silk. Both these fibres provide comfort during hot summer weather and silk being a shiny fabric makes a great ethnic wear for weddings and other occasions.

Pochampally sarees face tough competition from pure cotton sarees and other varieties of silk sarees like eri,tassar and muga. The reason these sarees are in demand and never fade away despite of other cheaper options is the unmatched level of comfort it provides and the unique ethnic look it gives which cannot be achieved with other types.

Impact over the years

The village of pochampally, which started the production of ikat silk sarees in the 18th century with just 80 villages is now a pool of skillful artists with as many as 10,000 families working with it. By 1999, this artwork saw the introduction of automated equipment and other machines which made pochampally weaving all the more cost-effective, simple, time-saving and labour-friendly.

With the emergence of these advancements, the weaving and dying of pochampally became very convenient and it also improved the outcome of the weaving process.

The new age designers have come up with new and latest motifs and patterns keeping in mind the taste and liking of the present generation. The skilled weavers of both new and old generation are keeping pace with the changing consumer taste in fashion and coming up with beautiful artworks preventing this beautiful art from becoming obsolete.

The pochampally designs can now also be seen on bedsheets, cushion covers, dress materials, bags and many more items thereby paving way for more creativity.

Global Influences

Pochampally sarees got their Intellectual Property Rights in 2005 under the Geographical Indication. Moreover, Pochampally village is declared as the “iconic saree weaving clusters of India” under the provisional list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.

This fabric carries an unmatched comfort which is suitable for all seasons and has excellent designs and patterns which gives it an elegant look. The demand of Pochampally sarees is not limited to India only. These sarees are famous worldwide amongst people of all age groups.
