In a significant development, the Assam government and the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) have reached a consensus on 38 crucial points outlined in the Central panel’s report concerning the Assam Accord. This agreement marks a pivotal step in addressing long-standing issues related to the Accord, which has been a cornerstone of regional politics since its inception in 1985.
The Assam Accord, signed after years of agitation, aims to safeguard the cultural, social, and economic interests of the Assamese people. The recent consensus is expected to pave the way for smoother implementation of the Accord’s provisions, which have often been a source of contention between various stakeholders.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed optimism, stating that this agreement demonstrates a unified commitment to the Accord’s objectives. Meanwhile, AASU leaders have hailed the consensus as a victory for the people of Assam, emphasizing the importance of preserving the state’s unique identity.
The Central panel’s report, which served as the basis for this agreement, was the result of extensive consultations with diverse groups across Assam, ensuring that the voices of all communities were heard and considered.
