Bumrah’s Masterclass: A Lesson in Test Cricket for Young Konstas, Says Katich

Melbourne, Dec 30 (PTI) – Former Australian opener Simon Katich believes that young Sam Konstas will gradually grasp the intricacies and allure of Test cricket, as demonstrated by Jasprit Bumrah during the Boxing Day Test. Despite Konstas’ impressive debut with a fiery fifty in the first innings, Bumrah’s skillful bowling in the second innings offered the debutant a lesson in the challenges of the format.

Katich, who represented Australia in 56 Tests from 2001 to 2010, encourages Konstas to maintain his unique batting style, acknowledging that no one expects a 19-year-old to be a finished product. “It’s tough, and there will always be hype when a 19-year-old debuts, as it’s a rare feat at his age,” Katich remarked in an interview with PTI.

Konstas scored a brisk 60 off 65 balls in the first innings, showcasing his aggressive style with unconventional shots against Bumrah, including a lap scoop and a reverse lap scoop. However, Bumrah’s exceptional off-cutter dismissed Konstas for 8 in the second innings, underscoring the unpredictable nature of Test cricket.

“His courage in the first innings at the MCG was commendable, especially against arguably the best bowler in the series, Jasprit Bumrah,” Katich noted. “While Konstas found ways to counter Bumrah with unconventional shots, the second innings highlighted the evolving challenges of Test cricket.”

Katich sees potential in Konstas, despite his youth, and draws comparisons to David Warner’s aggression, though he notes differences in style and temperament. “Konstas is a different player, taller and capable of unsettling bowlers by running down the track,” Katich explained.

On the topic of team selection, Katich suggests that Australia’s selectors may need to reconsider Mitchell Marsh’s role if he continues to underperform with both bat and ball. “Marsh is under pressure, especially with limited bowling contributions,” Katich observed, hinting at potential replacements like Jhye Richardson or Sean Abbott.

Katich also praised Bumrah as one of the finest fast bowlers to have toured Australia in recent decades. “Bumrah’s numbers speak volumes, and his ability to control the game with pace, movement, and precision is exceptional,” Katich concluded.
